science biology study Flashcards
(15 cards)
Chloroplast structure/function
Traps energy from sun to make glucose. Site of photosynthesis and the production of energy rich compounds such as glucose.
Centriole structure
small cylindrical organelle near nucleus in animal cells
Centriole function
organizes spindle fibers involved in cell division.
Chromatin structure
found in nucleus, complex of proteins and DNA
Chromatin function
contains the genes that produce the RNA portions of the ribosomes.
Vesicles structure
small membrane bound bubble within the cell.
Vesicles function
transport and or store materials inside the cell and sometimes help materials enter and exit through the cell membrane.
Nucleolus structure
Biggest structure found within the nucleus
Nucleolus function
contains the genes that produce the RNA portions of the ribosomes.
Ribosomes structure
two sub -units, large sub - units and small sub - units composed of proteins and RNA.
Ribosomes function
Produces proteins required in order for cell survival.
Lysosomes structure
Small, double membrane bound organelles filled with enzymes produced by the Golgi apparatus.
Lysosomes function
Contains digestive enzymes and break down excess or worn out cell parts
Golgi body structure
membrane bound, made up of a series of flattened stacks pouches called (cisternae)
Golgi body function
Modifies fats and proteins and packages them and sends them to other parts of the cell or for use outside the cell.
