science organelles 0.5 Flashcards
(14 cards)
Cell membrane structure
a layer of fats (phospholipids) and proteins which surrounds the cytoplasm
Cell membrane function
separates inside of cell from external environment
Cell wall structure
Tough rigid structure laying just outside the plant cells cell membrane.
Cell wall function
provides structural support for plant cell and prevents the cell from bursting do to osmotic pressure.
Cytoplasm structure
Jelly like substance that consist of water, nutrients and other raw materials of the cell. Contains everything bounded by the cell membrane except the nucleus.
Cytoplasm function
Keeps all cellular organelles suspended and helps with the movement of the cell through the process of cytoplasm streaming process.
Nucleus structure
bounded by a double membrane and contains DNA
Nucleus function
controls all of the cells activities
Vacuole structure
Contains water and other materials as well as transports/stores small molecules
Vacuole function
Storage area for cell waste, mostly water and food particles.
Endoplasm reticulum structure
Membrane bound network of channels throughout the cytoplasm.
Endoplasm reticulum function
Rough: synthesized and packages proteins and ribosomes attached to it’s surface.
Smooth: make Lipids, Phospholipids, and steroids
Mitochondrion structure
Oval shaped, double membrane bound organelle, self - replicating, contains it’s own DNA. Inner membrane is highly folded in order for more reactions to occur.
Mitochondrion function
Converts nutrients into energy in order to fuel cell activities.
