Science EOY 2 Flashcards
(38 cards)
Vacuum
A completely empty space, containing no particles.
Matter
All things are made of matter. There are three states of matter: solid, liquid, gas.
Longitudinal wave
A wave where the particles vibrate in the same direction as the wave is travelling.
Transverse wave
A wave where the vibrations are at right angles to the direction the wave is travelling.
Ray
A narrow beam of light, or an arrow on a diagram representing the path of light and the direction in which it is travelling.
Transmit
To pass through a substance.
Transparent
A material that light can travel through without scattering. (Note: transparent substances may be coloured or colourless.)
Reflect
To bounce off a surface instead of passing through it or being absorbed.
Absorb
To soak up’ or ‘to take in’.To soak up’ or ‘to take in’.
Translucent
Material that lets light through but scatters it. You cannot see things clearly through translucent materials.
Opaque
Material that does not let light through. It is not possible to see through an opaque substance.
Convex lens vs Concave lens
Concave bends in, convex bulges out
Define nutrients.
Food substances that provide the raw materials needed by the body, including carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, and minerals.
Describe the role of carbohydrates in the body.
Carbohydrates are the body’s main source of energy, found in foods like bread, potatoes, and pasta.
What is fibre and what is its function?
Fibre is made of plant cell walls and is not used by the body; it helps food move through the intestines and prevents blockages.
Identify common sources of fats.
Dairy products and fried foods are common sources of fats.
Describe the uses of carbohydrates.
Carbohydrates serve as the body’s main energy source.
Explain the uses of fats in the body.
Fats are a stored energy source and provide insulation under the skin.
What is the significance of food in diet?
Food provides the raw materials necessary for energy and body functions.
Describe the function of fibre in digestion.
Fibre helps food move through the intestines and prevents blockages.
Identify the types of nutrients that provide raw materials for the body.
Carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, and minerals.
Define temperature in the context of physics.
Temperature is how hot or cold an object is, measured in degrees Celsius (°C).
