Science test /rocks Flashcards
(19 cards)
what test do use to clasify a rock
Streak colour, lustre, hardness, flame colour, overall looks
What are some social and envirtomental effects on mining
Socialy mining expands human material and can therefore expand the ecpnomy and manufacturinmg world. althouguh it can be damageing to the enviroment ato disturb the natural growth of many natural elememts
what are intrusive and extrusive
Intrusive grows under the crust meaning the crystals have more time to grow
Extrusive grows above the surface meaning the crystals have less time to grow.
what is the definituion of a mineral
A naturaly occuring solid that is not made by any organism
whjat are the divergent boundeeies
Tectonic plates move apart from each other causiong a breakage in the lithosphere which sinks into the asthenosphere and becomes what is called a rift. Magma seeps into the fill gaps and hardens to form another layer
what is continental drift
The continents once formed a massive land mass called pangea and over yeasr the tectonics seberated the ‘continents and they became wahgt they aare today.
what are convergent boundaries
when tectonics fold ‘up’ to create volcanoes and mountains
Tectonic plates
They are apart of the earth’s crust, they move very slowly at different speeds. there are 7 main plates.
hat is the difference between the outer and inner core?
The inner is solid and the outer is liquid.
What are the 3 types of sedimentary rocks
Clastic, chemical and biogenic sedimentary rocks.
what are sedimentary rocks
They are rocks made up of other rocks that have been compacted and cemented together to form layers
WHat are the lithosphere and asthenosphere and how are they different
Lithosphere is the upper most part of earths mantle and made up of crust and the asthenosphere is the second most upper portion of the mantle.
What is the definition of an ore
A rock made up of special minerals (crystals)
What are the layerd of eary organised by chemical composition
Crust , Mantle Core
WHat are the 3 types of plate tectonic boundaries
Divergent boundaries, Convergent Boundaries and Transform Boundaries
What is the diference between regiopnal metamorphissm, contact metamorphism and dynamic metamorphicism
Regional is when both heat and presure is applied simultaneously, contact is when rocks are altered by mainly heat and it happens in small areas. Dynamic is when the rock is altered mainly by pressure in small areas.
What is the evidence of Continental drift and plate tectonics?
Matching fossils and complimentary coastlines on opposite continents prove continental drift. VOlcanoes and mountains only form on the meeting point of tectonic plates.
WHat is the definition of a rock
The solid mineral material forming prt of the surface of the earth.
what is an igneouse rock
rocks that are formed by the hardening of lava
