Science Unit 5 Lesson 1 Flashcards
(16 cards)
Why do cells divide?
Reproduction, Growth, and Repair
DNA
The genetic materials in cells
Chromatin
When DNA wraps around proteins to form a complex material
Chromosomes
A threadlike structure in where their is chromatin
Chromatids
2 identical structures from a duplicated chromosome
Centromeres
Pieces that hold together chromatids
Cell Cycle
The life cycle of a eukaryotic cell
What are the 3 stages of the cell cycle?
Interphase, mitosis, and cytokinesis
The part of a cells life where it doesn’t divide
Interphase
The part of the cell cycle where the nucleus divides
Mitosis
The division of the parent cells cytoplasm
Cytokinosis
What are the 4 phases of mitosis?
Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase, and Telophase
What happens during Prophase?
The chromosomes of a nucleus condense
What happens during Metaphase?
The chromosomes line up in the middle of a cell
What happens during Anaphase?
The chromatids separate
What happens during Telophase?
A new nuclear membrane forms around the chromosomes
