Unit 3 Lesson 1 Flashcards
(17 cards)
What are the components of the Crust?
Oxygen, Silicon, and Aluminum
What are the components of the Mantle?
Magnesium, Less Silicon, and Less Aluminum
What are the components of the Core?
Iron, and Nickel
The 5 Physical Layers (In order) are
The Lithosphere, Asthenosphere, Mesosphere, Outer Core, and Inner Core
Is the Lithosphere a Solid, Liquid, or a gas
Solid
The Asthenosphere is a soft ______
Mantle
The Mesosphere flows ______ than rock in the Asthenosphere
Slower
The Outer Core is a Solid Liquid or a Gas
Liquid
The Inner Core is a Solid Liquid or a Gas
Solid
P-waves
Come first, don’t cause damage to property, and are compressed waves
S-waves
Come second, cause damage to property, and are uncompressed waves
Heat Sources of energy in Earths interior
Collisons, gravity and radioactive decay
What is Differentiation
The process where the force of gravity
pulled high-density materials toward the center, and
materials with low densities were pushed toward the
surface.
Collisons
Moving objects have kinetic energy - the
energy of motion. If two objects collide, some kinetic
energy is converted to energy in the form of heat.
Gravity
During Earth’s molten state, particles in the
interior had gravitational potential energy. As dense
material sank, their gravitational potential energy was
converted to energy as heat.
Radioactive Decay
When the earth was formed,
many unstable materials in the planet were breaking
down into stable materials. In this process, called
radioactive decay, a large amount of energy in the form
of heat was released.
What are the 2 types of crust
Continental and Oceanic
