Science Viruses Flashcards
(9 cards)
operon
a unit made of linked genes that is thought to regulate other genes responsible for protein synthesis.
Are viruses alive and what are they made of?
no they are not alive, viruses are an inner core of DNA surrounded by a protein coat
lac operon
when repressor binds to promoter and blocks RNA polymerase, lactose sugar connects to the repressor so that it will unbind and let RNA polymerase transcript, once lactose is low, lactose disconnects the repressor and it returns to DNA
trp operon
when RNA polymerase makes a lot of tryptophan, it will attach to a repressor to cause it to stop the production until tryptophan is low again
promoter
the region where RNA polymerase can connect to start transcription
operator
segment of DNA where a repressor binds to
repressor
protein that binds to an operator to block transcription
inducer
lactose, inhibits the repressor from freely binding to the operator
RNA Polymerase
enzyme that uses transcription across a strand of DNA to make mRNA to go through traslation
