ScotDem - Democracy Flashcards
(2 cards)
Describe the rights and responsibilities of individuals in a democracy (6)
One right that people have in a democracy is the right to vote. This means that they are able to have an input on what happens within their country. Evidence of this is that the Scottish public can vote in the UK general elections whenever they are called, such as in 2024.
Another right that people have within a democracy is the right to protest. This means that citizens have the right to profess their opinions publicly on matters they feel strongly about. Evidence of this is the Edinburgh anti-racism protests, sparked from the Southport Riots (2024).
Describe, some of the features of a democracy (6)
One key feature of a democracy is having more than one political party. This means that people are free to vote for someone they feel represents them and their values. Evidence of this is having a multitude of political parties, eg. Labour, Conservative, SNP.
Another key feature of a democracy is having free media. This means that citizens can express their thoughts and opinions freely as long as it does not violate hate laws. Evidence of this is over 8000 abusive comments and messages sent to MSP’s involved in a controversial case in 2021. (BBC)
