USA - Socio-Eco Inequality Flashcards
(5 cards)
Explain the reasons why some groups experience socio-eco inequality (8)
One reason why some people experience socio-economic inequality in terms of gun crime is due to racism. This means that ethnic minorities such as blacks are more likely to be targeted by racist white gun owners. Evidence of this is in 2020 over 12000 black Americans were killed with guns compared to the 7000 white Americans.
One reason why people may experience socio-economic inequality in terms of health is because they are unemployed. This means that they may be uninsured as they don’t have an employer to cover health care. Evidence of this is the government funded programme ‘Medicaid’, created to cover health care costs for those who cannot afford it though its far less comprehensive than private cover.
One reason why some people experience socio-economic difficulties in education in the USA is location. This means that because of lower taxes in poorer areas, some areas schools receive less funding. Evidence of this is Fort Necessity School in LA, where 78% of pupils are economically disadvantaged and only 7% of students are at or above the proficient level for maths. (USnews)
Explain why some groups are more socio-eco successful (8)
One reason why some groups are more socio-economical successful in terms of health is due to their race. This means that white people are more likely to have insurance as they are marginally more likely to be employed with health cover. Evidence of this is that under 7% of white Americans aged 0-64 didn’t have health insurance in 2023.
One reason why some groups are socio-economic successful in terms of housing is because of race. This means that white people may have an advantage over ethnic minorities in . Evidence of this is only 8% of white Americans were living on poverty in 2023 compared to 18% of black Americans.
One reason why some people are more socio-economically successful in education in the USA is location. This means that because of higher taxes in richer areas, some areas schools receive more funding. Evidence of this is the Davidson Academy in Nevada, where many of the students are economically advantaged and over 95% of their students are at or above the proficient level for maths and reading. Describe the government responses (8)
One way that the government has responded to socio-inequality is by introducing the Affordable Care Act programme. This allows families to receive more health security while also decreasing the price of health insurance that families must pay. Evidence of this is that 92% of people in America are covered by health insurance in 2023 (Census.gov)
One way in which the government has responded to socio-eco inequality is the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Programme. This aims to tackle the issue of hunger by using a debit card to help low-income families in hopes to lose the shame of food stamps. Evidence of this is that SNAP is aiding around 12.5% of Americans as of 2023. (Pew research)
One way in which the government has responded to socio-economic inequality is with Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals. This means that the government helps with kids who were brought to the USA by illegal immigration to become legal citizens. Evidence of this is DACA has enabled over 900 thousands immigrants to stay in the US as of 2025. (KFF)
Describe the governments effective responses to socio-eco inequality (8)
One way the govt response has been effective is through DACA .This means that DACA aims to help children of illegal immigrants get support and a way of getting a good job. Evidence of this is 55% of DACA recipients are employed as of 2017. (Migration policy.org)
One way the govt response has been effective is through SNAP (supplemental nutrition assistance program). This means that low income families get money put towards their food shopping for the month and pay with a debit card to reduce shame. Evidence of this is that SNAP has reduced food insecurity by 30% as of 2022.
One way in which the US govt has responded to social economic inequality is with the ACA program. This means that they target the issue of unaffordable health insurance by expanding access to insurance and improving protection quality. Evidence of this is that 92% of people in America are covered by health insurance in 2023 (Census.gov)
Describe the governments ineffective responses to socio-eco inequality (8)
One ineffective govt response has been SNAP, on the issue of need. This means that, while a debit card with credit is a helpful idea, the amounts are too low to properly support a family in need.
Evidence of this is most SNAP household spend the Amorite of their monthly allowance in the first 2 weeks. (NIH.gov)
Another ineffective govt response is the ACA, on the issue of health inequality. This means that, while ACA increased by millions the number of Americans insured, it is not enough. Evidence of this is over 25 million Americans uninsured as of 2023.
Another ineffective govt response is DACA, on the issue of illegal immigrants. This means that, even though DACA aims to educate and employ children of illegal immigrants, many still aren’t employed. Evidence of this is that 45% Of DACA recipients are un-employed as of 2017. (Migration policy.gov)
