Sex Discrimination Act
The Sex Discrimination Act (1948) gives effect to Australia’s international human rights obligations and promotes equality between women and men. The Act protects people from unfair treatment based on their sex.

It also made sexual harassment illegal for the first time in Australia and set up the Office of the Sex Discrimination Commissioner
Suzanne Hickie
Solicitor Suzanne Hickie was working at a law firm, Hunt and Hunt, when she became pregnant. Instead of approving her request to work part-time they removed her from her partnership position.
Violation
Hickie claimed the firm violated the Sex Discrimination Act, and the Human Rights Commission ruled in Hickie’s favour.
Example
This is an example of how Australia, upheld the rights of the Sex Discrimination Act, however women still experience inequality in many important parts of their lives.
Barrier
Women continue to face a gender pay gap and barriers to leadership roles, and they can’t always bring their case to court.
