Section 3 - Emergency Procedures Flashcards
(45 cards)
What does land immediately mean?
Land in nearest clear area where a safe normal landing can be performed. Be prepared to enter auto during approach.
What does land as soon as practical mean?
Land at pilot’s discretion based on the nature if the problem and available landing areas. Flight beyond nearest airport is not recommended.
What may cause a power failure?
Engine or drive system failure. Usually indicated by low RPM horn.
What may indicate an engine failure?
A change in noise level, nose left yaw, oil pressure light, or decreasing engine RPM.
What may indicate a drive system failure?
Unusual noise or vibration, nose right or left yaw, or decreasing rotor RPM while engine RPM is increasing.
What should you do immediately in case of power failure?
Lower collective to enter autorotation.
Caution: _ is required when collective is lowered at high airspeed.
Aft cyclic
Caution: do not apply _ during touchdown or ground slide to prevent possible _ .
Aft cyclic; blade strike to tailcone.
Power failure above 500ft AGL
- Lower collective
- Glide at 65 KIAS
- Adjust collective to keep rotor RPM between 97% and 110%. (Apply full down collective if 97% unattainable)
- Select landing spot, land into the wind if altitude permits
- Restart may be attempted
- If no restart, turn off fuel valve and unnecessary switches
- At 40ft AGL, begin cyclic flare
- At 8ft AGL, level ship, raise collective before touchdown to cushion landing
Power failure between 8 and 500ft AGL
- Lower collective
- Adjust collective to maintain 97% to 110% rotor RPM
- Maintain airspeed until ground is approached, begin flare
- At 8ft AGL, level ship, raise collective just before touchdown
Power failure below 8ft AGL
- Apply right pedal to prevent yaw
- Allow aircraft to settle
- Raise collective just before touchdown
Max glide configuration
- Airspeed 75 KIAS
- Rotor RPM 90%
- Ratio 4:1 or 1 nautical mile per 1500 feet AGL
CAUTION
Increase rotor RPM to 97% minimum when autorotating below 500ft AGL
Air restart procedure
- Mixture full rich
- Primer (if installed) down and locked
- Throttle closed, then cracked
- Actuate starter with left hand
CAUTION
Do not attempt restart if engine malfunction is suspected or before safe autorotation is established
Emergency water landing - power off
- Follow land power failure procedures until contacting water. If time permits, unlatch doors before water contact
- Apply lateral cyclic when aircraft contacts water to stop rotors
- Release seat belt and clear aircraft when rotors stop
Emergency water landing - power on
- Descend to hover above water
- Unlatch doors
- Passenger exit aircraft
- Fly to safe distance from passenger
- Turn off battery and alternator
- Roll throttle into overtravel spring
- Keep aircraft level, apply full collective as aircraft contacts water
- Apply lateral cyclic to stop rotors
- Release seat belt, clear aircraft when rotors stop
Loss of tail rotor thrust in forward flight
- Enter auto
- Maintain 70 KIAS if practical
- Select landing site, roll throttle into overtravel spring, perform autorotation landing
NOTE
when suitable landing site unavailable, stabilizers may permit limited controlled flight above 70 KIAS. Enter auto before reducing airspeed.
Loss of tail rotor thrust in hover
Indicated by uncontrollable right yaw
- Roll off throttle into overtravel spring, allow aircraft to settle
- Raise collective before touchdown
Headset audio failure
Land as soon as practical
CAUTION
Low RPM horn will not be heard through audio system with a failed headset
Engine fire during start on ground
- Continue cranking to suck flames into engine
- If engine starts, run at 50-60% RPM
- Mixture off
- Fuel valve off
- Battery off
- If time permits, stop rotors
- Exit helicopter
Engine fire in flight
- Enter auto
- Cabin heat off (if time)
- Cabin vent on (if time)
- If engine running, land normally, then mixture and fuel valve off
- If engine stops, fuel valve off, complete autorotation landing
- If time, stop rotors
- Exit helicopter
Electrical fire in flight
- Batt and alternator off
- Open cabin vents
- Land immediately
- Fuel mixture and valve off
- If time, stop rotors
- Exit helicopter
CAUTION
Low rpm horn and governor inoperable with batt and alt switches off
Tach failure
Use remaining tach to monitor RPM. If unclear or both fail, allow governor to control RPM and land as soon as practical.
NOTE
each tach, gov, and low rpm horn are on separate power circuits. Tachs will have power with batt and alt off
Governor failure
Grip throttle firmly and turn governor off. Complete flight using manual throttle control.
Note: if light causes glare at night, …
Bulb may be unscrewed or breaker pulled to eliminate glare during landing
