Section 3.3 Flashcards
The Digestive System (8 cards)
Mouth
Starts the process of breaking down food mechanically (chewing) and chemically (enzymes found in saliva)
Esophagus
A muscular tube that contracts and relaxes smooth muscle tissue to control the movement of food being passed through
Stomach
Holds and churns food to continue the digestive process. Acids present also aid further digestion
Small intestine
Where most of the digestion occurs. Nutrients diffuse through the wall of the small intestine to enter the bloodstream
Large Intestine
The lining absorbs the leftover water from the indigestible food. The remaining matter is later removed from the body.
Liver
Produces a fluid called bile which helps breakdown fats from our food
Pancreas
Produces an enzyme called insulin which regulates the concentration of glucose in the blood
Gall bladder
Helps with digestion by providing enzymes. It also stores bile from the liver
