What is the function of the digestive system?
To break down the macromolecules found in food.
What are dental caries?
Tooth decay, cavities.
When bacteria metabolizes sugar.
What is gingivitis?
Inflammation of the gums.
What is periodontitis?
Loss of bone and loosening of the teeth.
What is peristalsis?
Contractions that push food through the digestive tract.
What is a sphincter?
A ring of muscle that acts as a valve.
What is heartburn?
Failure of the lower esophageal sphincter.
What is bile?
Produced by the liver & stored in the gallbladder; emulsifies fat.
What is pancreatic amylase?
Produced by the pancreas.
What is trypsin?
Produced by the pancreas.
What does pancreatic juice contain?
Sodium bicarbonate.
What does the large intestine contain?
Contains the cecum, colon, rectum, and anus; larger in diameter than the small intestine, shorter in length.
What is the cecum?
First portion of the large intestine.
What is the appendix?
Projection off of the cecum; fights infections.
What is appendicitis?
Inflamed appendix often due to infection.
What is the sensory function of the nervous system?
Takes info from the environment.
What is the integration function of the nervous system?
Sums up everything taking place, makes decisions on what needs to be done.
What is the motor function of the nervous system?
Output.
What does CNS stand for?
The brain and spinal cord.
What does PNS stand for?
Anything outside the brain and spinal cord.
What are cranial nerves?
Carries impulses to and from the brain.
What are spinal nerves?
Carry impulses to and from the spinal cord.
What are the three structures of neurons?
Cell body, dendrites, axon.
What are dendrites?
Short extensions off the cell body that receive signals from sensory receptors or other neurons.
