Q

What is the backbone switch ?

A

Connects to etg on the network.
Small network —> one switch for instance
For larger organizations you need one backbone switch and edge switches.
Edge switches are therefore closer to end users.

Q

What is the Main Distribution Frame (MDF)?

A

A MDF is where is located the backbone switch. It’s a telecommunications closets which serves as the main starting point for all interior cabling.
It’s like a trunk of a tree with branches that are Intermediate Distribution Frame.

Q

How to connect the MDF with the IDFs?

A

We use a cable Tray.
A unit or assembly of unit that form a rigid structural system to securely support the cables and raceways as cables go across the building.

Q

How do we solve the crossing of stairs ?

A

Best practice : minimize the number of cables that have to cross floors vertically. That’s why we use trunk cable to connect the MDF (backbone router and switch) with IDF (edge router and switch).

Q

What is a punch-down block ?

A

Located in MDF and IDF.
Four types :
- 66 : used in older analog CAT 3 networks and supports a 25 pair cable that would run to the MDF or IDF. Different shape than modern type 110 block.
- 110 : supports high speed data network for CAT 5 and above and includes the use of insulation displacement contact connectors
- Krone : proprietary european alternative to 110 block. Developped in the 70s the real difference is the angle. You need a specific tool
- BIX : another proprietary punch down block which is available in various sizes. You need a specific tool

Q

What is a patch panel ?

A

Keeps a data center or server room organized by making it easy to move add or change a cable distribution infrastructure.
One side : network Jacks
Other side : what looks like a 110 punch down block

Q

Why using a patch panel ?

A

Best practice and better to use. It’s cheap and protects from damages. It would be too complex to plug everything to switch directly.
