Section A Flashcards
(11 cards)
What’s the difference between weather and climate
Weather - refers to the specific atmospheric at a given location
Climate - the average weather that occurs in an area over a period of time
What are some things the weather refers to
Temperature
Air pressure
Cloud cover
Humidity
Precipitation (rain,snow etc)
What two things are climate change determined by
Anecdotal evidence
Scientific evidence
What is anecdotal evidence
Reports or interpretations from people about events that occur
What is scientific evidence
Data collected by scientists, interpretation of data to look at general trends not individual events
What is biosphere and what does it mean
Biosphere means the “living globe”
It’s a thin layer around the earth that supports life
What 3 layers is the biosphere composed of
Atmosphere
Lithosphere
Hydrosphere
What is the atmosphere and what gases is it composed of
What percentage of sun does it absorb?
All of the gases surrounding the earth also absorbs 20% of the suns energy
78% nitrogen - needed for plant growth
21% oxygen - needed by organisms, maintained by photosynthesis
How many layers of the atmosphere are there and what are they determined by
Determined by average air temperature and altitude
What is the ozone layer and formula
An inorganic molecule found in the stratosphere
Absorbs UV radiation from the sun
O(3) + UV radiation = O(2) + O
What are the 2 reasons the ozone layer is depleting
- Reaction with chlorofluorocarbons (man-made chemicals)
- Natural cycles in the atmosphere
