Section B Flashcards
(7 cards)
What is relative ethics
The moral quality of an action is dependent on the circumstance in which it occured. There are no absolute standards for “right” or “wrong,” they’re just different
What is absolute ethics
There is a universal rule for “right” and “wrong,” regardless of situation
What is consequentialism
Use potential consequences to determine morals, or the best action to take.
Goal is to either minimize bad or maximize good.
What is virtue ethics
It is the intention behind the action that matters
What is natural law
There is an absolute morality to the universe upheld by God, and moral failure is just a corruption of the natural state (leads to problems with viewing cultural differences)
What is deontological ethics
Society functioning well depends on everyone following the rules. It’s the only way to achieve the common good (uses absolute ethics)
What does Christian ethics involve
Participation in the biblical story, allowing ourselves to be formed by God, and a theological redescription of the world and of history.
NOT just a set of rules for living!
