What is a seizure?
Symptoms from sudden, uncontrolled neuronal electrical activity.
Epilepsy?
Recurrent seizures with no provocation.
What are Focal Seizures?
Originates from 1 hemisphere of brain, localized signs.
What are Generalized Seizures?
Originates from bilateral networks, no localized signs
Types of Focal Seizures?
Simple - no loss of consciousness + confusion after.
Complex - loss of consciousness (LOC) at onset + post-ictal confusion.
Types of Generalized Seizures?
1) Absence: Pause <10 seconds, no LOC.
2) Tonic-clonic: LOC, Post-ictal confusion + stiffness/jerk.
3) Myoclonic: Sudden jerking, no LOC.
4) Atonic: Crumpling, loss of tone. No LOC
RED flags for Epilepsy?
LATERAL tongue biting + slow recovery.
