OPEN QUESTIONNAIRES
P’s are able to provide their own answers however they want
CLOSED QUESTIONNAIRES
There is a predetermined range of answers for P’s or ratings

- Range of possible answers
- P’s are able to elaborate and explain
WEAKNESSES
- More difficult to summarise data and detect patterns

CLOSED QUESTIONNAIRES
STRENGTHS
- Easier to analyse i.e mean
WEAKNESSES
- May be forced to choose an answer that is not representative of thoughts
- Cannot elaborate answer
STRUCTURED INTERVIEWS
Questions are decided in advance and interviewers only ask those questions
UNSTRUCTURED INTERVIEWS
No prearranged questions to ask. Interviewer decides questions at the time.
SEMI-STRUCTURED INTERVIEWS
Interview stars off with some general aims and some Questions, then lets responders answers guide subsequent questions

- Easily repeated
- Standardised so can be easily compared / analysed
WEAKNESSES
- Different Interviewers may behave differently
- May influence response (needs training)

- More freedom
- Ask follow up questions
- Ask specific questions
WEAKNESSES
- Interviewers expectations may influence questions asked and then given (investigator effect)
- Expensive to train interviewers

STRENGTHS
- Allows for follow up questions and specific tailored questions
- Can keep interviewers on track
WEAKNESSES
- More skills needed to develop questions on the spot
- More expensive to train
