VALIDITY Flashcards
(9 cards)
VALIDITY
Measuring what is claimed to be measured
INTERNAL VALIDITY
- Concerns with what goes on in the study
- Whether the IV produced the change in the DV or was there a confounding variable?
- Whether researcher tested what they intended to test
- Whether or not study had or lacked mundane realism
EXTERNAL VALIDITY
- Extent to which you generalise findings of a study to other situations
- External is affected by the internal
- Where was the research conducted
- Who are studied
- Historical period
FACE VALIDITY
Does the test look like it would produce Valid results, concerns external validity.
CONCURRENT VALIDITY
Establishing external validity by comparing an existing test or questionnaire with the one you are interested in
PREDICTIVE VALIDITY
Whether the scores on a test predict what you would expect them to predict
Correlating the results on a test with some other example of the behaviour that is being tested
CONTENT VALIDITY
Aims to demonstrate that the content of a test/measurement represents the area of interest.
Concerns internal Validity.
Whether your method of measuring is measuring what you intent to measure
CONSTRUCT VALIDITY
Demonstrating the extent to which performance on the test measures an identified underlying construct (theory).
Concerns internal validity
THREATS TO INTERNAL VALIDITY
- Participant Reactivity
(Countered with: Single blind, Isolating p’s) - Researcher Bias
(Countered with: Standardising, Double blind design)
-Experimental Design Issue
(Countered with: Matched pairs, Counter balancing) - Situational Variables
(Countered with: Control lab experiments)
