Self Report Design Flashcards
(5 cards)
Designing questionnaires
Likert scales:
- respondent indicates theri agreement or other wise with a statement using a scale of usually 5 points
Rating scales:
- respondents identify a value that represents their strength of feeling about a particular topic
Fixed-choice option:
- list of possible options and respondents are required to indicate those that apply to them
Designing interviews
Interview schedule = list of Q the interviewer intends to cover; should be standardised to reduce interviewer bias
- usually single pts interviews but can be group e.g. clinical trail
- start with neutral Q to make the pts feel at ease, tell pts that their answers will be confidential {reduce ethical issues}
Things that should be avoided - overuse of jargon
- technical term that is familiar to those within a specialised field or area
- overuse leads to confusion
Emotive language and leading questions
- sometimes a researchers attitude towards a topic is clear from how the Qs are phrased
Double barrelled questions and double negatives
Double barrelled Q = contains 2 Qs in one; issue being that respondents may agree with one half but not the other
Double negatives = difficult for the respondents to decipher
