What is your leadership style
Transformational- I would try to create valuable and positive change in the constables with the end goal of teaching them to be leaders
Have you ever had a conflict with another officer
Yes..I was field training an experienced new hire posted to a one man location.Despite training I noticed incomplete investigations and poor file management. After speaking with the officer on the phone he became upset as he did not think he needed to be supervised.
I asked the officer to meet in Edmonton to review his check sheet and to go over the files. We met and discussed each file in detail and what possible avenues of investigation could be taken
Files were promptly completed to my satisfaction. The officer was embarrassed by his lack of expertise.
What have you done to prepare yourself for a leadership role?
Through the Saskatchewan College and CPKN I have taken supervisory and leadership courses
I have taken on Sergeants responsibilities assisting in strategic planning and file review
Give an example when you were given a task involving leadership
As the National firearms coordinator I was tasked with preparing a business case to select a new pistol, holster and ammunition for our service.
Leadership involved delegation responsibilities, proposing test methods, analyzing information, communication with my peers and other police agencies.
The business case was prepared and approved.
Why do you want the promotion to Sergeant
As a potential Sergeant the question is not what I want but more what needs to be done. I want to assist in providing strategy and direction and then focusing on providing the resources the Constables need to complete their task
How would CI-workers describe your work?
My team members would describe my work as detail oriented and efficient.
How will this affect your current work relationships
I will maintain the same working relationships that I currently have when Imam promoted. My goal will be to help and mentor my team and let them know the environment will be open, honest and inclusive.
Give an example of smart stakeholder engagement
Smart stakeholder engagement is developing and maintaining relationships so the stakeholder has a better understanding of what CN is and what it stands for
1 I held a meeting in Parkland county regarding organizing and leading a table top exercise simulating a derailment
2 I later facilitated the exercise with members of parkland county, police, ems, media, CN dangerous goods and Transport Canada
3 it was well received and proved vital in a derailment near Gainford
How to complete a sit-rep
- Best completed on scene in consultation with Insp.
- The CN ERP with details as to
When it was activated, progress updates every 15 min tapering off to every hour - Sit-rep allows for proper determination of the appropriate level of security and resources required on site.
- Any issue that can generate an impact, including media or politician, government, visitors, suspicious incidents, protest near the site, and anything that can be of interest for CNPS or CN Corporate Services
What are must haves of a sit rep
1.As a priority members must clearly identify who may have been in charge of the scene prior to CNPS arrival. Document the information.
2. Important to document exact times that scene/access control changes
3. Names of number of visitors that were approved by the Incident Commander and who took charge of them. Mention them in the Sit-Rep
4. Determine the extent of the derailment..number of involved cars..train number..damaged/derailed car numbers, DG’s, consist of rail cars
5. How many CN employees and contractors on site
6. Ensure sit-rep includes every time contact is made with on-scene CN Incident Commander. Include location of the command centre/content of these conversations and any new information.
Members should also note any issues or obstacles that may require the intervention of the Insp or CNPS.
7. Clear description of the geography, proximity and effect on local communities, number of access points, traffic control issues and security issues.
8. Must include detailed plans, including resourcing issues/required security issues
9. Once security/traffic plans are in place members shall include in the hourly updates the status of the plans-are they working?
10. Include expected time of cleanup and when security/traffic will no longer be required
11. Report any media worthy aspects of the event
