Lesson 8A
liquid crystal display (LCD)
touch screen
is a compound whose properties change with
the application of voltage.
is a specialized type of field-effect transistor where the active components like the semiconductor, dielectric, and electrodes are made from thin film materials, typically deposited on a non-conducting substrate like glass, and are primarily used in flat-panel displays like liquid crystal displays (LCDs) to individually control the brightness of each pixel, acting as an “on/off” switch for each pixel within the display matrix;
thin film transistor (TFT)
crystals twist or untwist in response to the voltage level. Earliest type w fast respone time.
TFT technology
Twisted nematic (TN)
uses crystals that rotate rather than twist like, The main benefit is to deliver better color reproduction at a wider range of viewing angles.
TFT techonology
In-plane switching (IPS)
Vertical alignment (VA)
LCD
uses crystals that tilt rather than twist or rotate.
This technology supports a wide color gamut and the best contrast-ratio performance. more prone to motion blur and ghosting.
In a TFT, the illumination is provided by an array of…,are arranged at the top or bottom of the screen, and a diffuser makes the light evenly bright across the whole of the screen.
light-emitting diodes (LED)
panel does not require a separate backlight. This allows much better contrast ratios and allows the display to be thinner, lighter, and consume less power. made by plastic w. drawbacks of burn-in imprints and lower brightness under the sun.
organic LED (OLED)
or
advanced matrix OLED (AMOLED)
is a glass layer on a touchscreen device that converts touch input into digital software instructions. Analog signals are detected by a grid of sensors when you tap or swipe the surface of the screen.
mobile display components
digitizer
accelerometers and gyroscopes
mobile screen
components can detect when the device
changes position and adjust the screen orientation appropriately. As well as switching screen orientation, this can be used as a control mechanism (for example, a driving game could allow the tablet itself to function as a steering wheel).
usually refers to the embedded panel on a laptop computer that is used for pointer control. Most touchpads now support multitouch and gestures.
Use
Touchpad
A larger touchpad
Trackpad
most widely used for sketching and painting in a digital art application. require careful configuration to set up gesture support, calibrate to the screen area, and adjust sensitivity.
Drawing pad
allows for more precise control and can be used for
handwriting and drawing on touchscreen.
touch pen or stylus
allows for video recording or web conferencing
and can also be used to take still pictures.
mobile input/output
digital camera
use either the 3.5 mm audio jack or a
USB/Lightning connector. unwifred uses bluetooth connectivity.
headset
airlines prohibit passengers from using radio-based devices while on board a plane. disables some or all of the wireless features (cellular data, Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth, and NFC),
airplane mode
Wi-Fi Antenna Connector/Placement
display screen is that the antenna wires for the Wi-Fi and cellular radios are run around it. The antenna wires are connected to the adapter via internal wiring.
Cellular data networking
means connecting to the Internet via the device’s cellular radio and the handset’s network provider.
allows subscribers to use a removable subscriber identity module (SIM) card to use an unlocked handset with their chosen network provider. GSM is adopted internationally and by AT&T and T-Mobile in the United States.
Global System for Mobile Communication (GSM)
means that the handset is directly managed by the provider and there is no removable SIM card. CDMA adoption is largely restricted to the telecom providers Sprint and Verizon.
Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA)
is a database that tells a phone which networks to use when it’s roaming outside of its home area. can be triggered from the device’s Settings menu or by dialing a special code, such as *228.
preferred roaming list (PRL)
All 4G and 5G cellular data connections require a SIM card. Devices with SIM cards do not require the PRL to be updated manually.
Long Term Evolution (LTE)
configure the device with the usual settings for an access point (network name, security type, and passphrase), and then other devices can connect to it as they would with any other Wi-Fi access points.
