the point at which the settlement is located , factors such as relief , soil , water supply and resources are important in determining it .
situation
where the settlement is located in terms of its surrounding features such as other settlements , rivers , mountains and communities. This determines whether the settlement will stay as a vi;;age or continue to grow.

functions
the functions of a settlement relates to its economic and social development and refers to its main activities.
the larger the settlement , the more functions a settlement is likely to have.
the function can change over time as a settlement grows and develops.

settlement hierarchy - the ranking of settlement in order of their importance

- large cities or conurbations

- large towns
- small towns

the sphere of influence
the area which is served by a settlement or by a service.
threshold population
the minimum number of people before a particular good or service can be provided in an area or it to remain profitable
range
the maximum distance people are prepared to travel to purchase it
low order
these shops mainly sell low priced goods that people buy frequently. People are not going far to obtain them. eg. bakery , butcher , supermarket
middle order
goods are time-to-time items that are bought but not as regularly as low order goods . eg salons , clothes . computers
high order
these shops are those that mainly sell high priced goods that people only buy on occasion. eg holidays ,jewellery, cars
squatter settlement
are informal and often illegal settlements with slum-type housing often built on the edge of LEDC cities
