Where is Sheffield located and why is it important?
on the confluence of two rivers, which enabled them to move goods around. Factories were also built on the edge of the rivers to use watermills for energy
What was Sheffield known for?
coal mining and steel works
Why was it so important?
Throughout the Industrial Revolution, people migrated to urban areas like Sheffield to work in factories, which enabled them to grow economically
Why were the factories abandoned? What was the impact of this?
Deindustrialisation due to mechanisation and cheaper labour in LICs/NEEs, meant that there was mass unemployment and social/economic decline
How does the city of Sheffield keep their links to the past?
- Sheffield Forgemasters are still exporting globally
- Cultural Industries Quarter (Alfred Beckett & Sons Ltd)
- new art instillations throughout the city (steel balls)
What are some new connections made in Sheffield?
- It’s universities have links to the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC). This encouraged other companies to work there e.g. McLaren Automotive
