Q

Laptop

A

Portable computers that you can take with and use in different environments.
Include a screen, keyboard and trackpad.

Have battery which allows them to operate without being plugged into a power outlet. Include power adaptor to charge battery.

22
Q

Wireless connection

A

No physical connection between sender and receiver.
Network is connected by radio waves or microwaves to maintain communications.

23
Q

VPN

A

Virtual Private Network

create secure private network connection over a public network as if your computing device is directly connected to private network.

Encrypts your internet traffic, difficult for anyone to intercept or access data.

Masks IP address, ensuring anonymity.

Bypasses geo-restrictions and censorship.

Enhances online privacy and security.

Prevents tracking by ISPs or third parties.

24
Q

VoIP

A

Voice over Internet Protocol

allows to make voice calls over the internet instead of traditional phone lines.

converts voice into digital signals and transmits them over the internet to the recipient, who then hears the voice as if on phone call.

more cost-effective, features like video calling and instant messaging.

25
Internet Protocol
IP uses set of rules to send and receive messages at internet address level.
26
Input Devices
Keyboard Mice scanner Touch screens Barcode readers
27
Output Devices
Printers Monitor Speakers Headphones
28
Hard drive capacity
Amount of data,HDD can store. Higher capacity can store more data like files, documents, photos, and videos. Measured in GB and TB.
29
Benchmarking
Compare and evaluate performance of system against same/similar system. Helps companies stay competitive, improve performance and achieve goals. Used in business performance, quality improvement, process improvement, product development.
30
Motherboard
It holds everything in place, lets components communicate with each other. Foundation of computer
31
USB PORT
12 pin connector, allows stand alone electronic devices to be connected via cables to a computer or to each other.
32
Updating/upgrading software files
Computers have latest tools and utilities to execute instructions. Update = Small changes (bug fixes, security patches, performance improvements). Upgrade = Big changes (new version, new features, major improvements). Update = Improve. Upgrade = Advance.
33
Defragmentation
Reorganizing scattered file pieces on a hard drive. “Defrag = tidy up files for performance speed and improvement.” Useful for: HDDs, not needed for SSDs.
34
Cache memory
1000x faster than RAM, holds frequently used data and instructions
35
Arithmetic Logic Unit (ALU)
Has special memory location called registers. performs arithmetic and logical operations on data. Perform addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, logic comparison.
36
Storage Devices
USB drives Hard disk drive Solid state drive SD cards CD/ DVDs NVMe
37
VLAN
Virtual Local Area Network A logical group of devices that act like they're on the same local network, even if they're far apart. Benefits: Reduces latency, saves resources. Improves security, scalability, management. Controls traffic easily for better efficiency. Think: “VLAN = Virtual group, faster, safer, smarter network.”
38
Server
A program or device that provides functionality for other programs or devices called clients
39
Internet of Things (IoT)
Encompasses everything connected to Internet. Is made up of devices from simple sensors to smartphones and wearables- connected together
40
Virtualization
Creation of a virtual resource such as server, desktop, operating system, file, storage, or network.
41
Video Graphic Array
15 pin connector used to produce an image on screen. Found on computer monitor, TV sets
42
Services offered by ISP
Access Internet Backup of data Access to cloud Telephone line and access to telephone network Security system User account, log in
43
DHCP
Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol Automatically assign unique IP addresses to devices on a network, saving time and risk of conflicts. Operates on client server model. Leases IP addresses to clients for specific period of time, after which Client must renew the lease or obtain a new IP address.
44
FTP
Transfer of computer files between a client and server on a computer network.
45
FTPs
Secures data with SSL/TLS encryption. Prevents tampering and eavesdropping. Compatible with SSL/TLS-enabled FTP setups. Supports implicit and explicit encryption modes.
46
Provide THREE examples of peripherals that can be connected to a modern PC.
Mouse: An input device used for navigating and interacting with the graphical user interface. Keyboard: An input device used for typing and executing commands. Printer: An output device used for producing physical copies of documents and images.
47
WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy)
Old Wi-Fi security using RC4 encryption. Uses 64-bit or 128-bit keys. Now outdated and insecure due to known vulnerabilities. Think: “WEP = Weak, old protection – not safe today.”
48
MIMO (Multiple Input, Multiple Output)
MIMO (Multiple Input, Multiple Output) = Uses multiple antennas to boost performance. Improves speed, range, and reliability by sending/receiving multiple signals at once. Reduces interference with spatial diversity. Key tech in modern Wi-Fi for faster, more efficient connections. Think: “MIMO = More antennas, more speed, more reliability.”
49
SSID (Service Set Identifier)
SSID (Service Set Identifier) = The name of a Wi-Fi network. Helps devices identify and connect to right network. Broadcasted by the router. Not a security feature. One router can have multiple SSIDs (e.g., 2.4GHz & 5GHz). Think: “SSID = Wi-Fi name tag – helps connect, not protect.”
50
Peer to Peer (P2P)
Each participant workstations (computer) has same privileges, responsibilities, capabilities. All computers interact, share resources as equals. Are simp.e but their performance decrease when there is heavy load.
