Shoulder Flashcards
(42 cards)
What bones make up the pectoral girdle?
Scapula - posterior
Clavicle - anterior
What is the major function of the pectoral girdle?
provide attachment for upper limb to the axial skeleton and movement flexibility
What is the shape of the clavicle?
S shape
What are the clavicle attachment sites (and name of each end)?
Medially: sternal end - attaches to manubrium of sternum
Laterally: acromial end - attaches to acromion process of scapula
What are the major functions of the clavicle?
- muscle attachment site
- holds the scapulae and arms out laterally from the thorax
What is the location of the scapulae?
dorsal ribcage - between rib 2 and 7
How many anatomical borders does the scapula have? (describe them)
- Superior border - short and sharp
- Medial border - parallel to spinal column
- Lateral border - thick, ends with glenoid cavity
What is the glenoid cavity?
The scapulae’s joint cavity for articulation with humerus
Describe the humerus’ proximal articulation
With glenoid cavity of scapula
What is the shoulder joint called?
Glenohumeral joint
Why is the shoulder prone to dislocation?
because the glenoid cavity is incredibly shallow
List the posterior thorax muscles that act on the scapula
- trapezius (considered as 3 muscles)
- levator scapulae
- rhomboids (major and minor) considered as 1 muscle
List the anterior thorax muscles that act on the scapula
- pectoralis minor
- serratus anterior
- subclavius
What movements can the scapula perform?
- elevation and depression
- protraction and retraction
- upward and downward rotation
What is the origin of levator scapulae?
transverse processes of vertebrae C1-C4 (neck)
What is the insertion of levator scapulae?
superior part of medial scapula
What is the action of levator scapulae?
elevate scapula and tilts glenoid fossa inferiorly by rotating scapula
What innervates the levator scapulae
Dorsal scapular nerve (C5)
Cervical nerves (C3-C4)
What is the origin of trapezius?
medial 1/3 of superior nuchal line
external occipital protuberance
nuchal ligament
spinous processes of C7-T12 (head to end of ribcage)
What is the insertion of trapezius?
lateral 1/3 of clavicle
acromion
spine of scapula
What is the action of trapezius?
elevates (superior fibres), depresses (inferior fibres), retracts (medial fibres), and rotates scapula
What nerve innervates the trapezius?
Accessory Nerve (CN XI) - cranial nerve not spinal nerve
What is the origin of the rhomboid?
Minor: nuchal ligament and spinous processes of C7-T1
Major: spinous processes of T2-T5
What is the insertion of the rhomboid?
Medial border of scapula
