King Alfred the Great
Anglo-Saxon king , King of Wessex (r. 871–899). Defended England from Viking invasions - B of Ed, established Danelaw, promoted unity and education , built BURHS as a line of defence , the OVERLORD
King Athelred the Unready
King of England (r. 978–1016). Struggled with Viking invasions. Ordered the St Brice’s Day Massacre (1002), paid Danegeld.
Sweyn Forkbeard
Danish king who invaded England and ruled briefly (1013–1014). Father of Cnut. Drove Athelred into exile.
King Cnut
Danish king of England (r. 1016–1035). United England, Denmark and Norway. Promoted peace between Anglo-Saxons and Danes.
King Edmund Ironside
Son of Athelred, briefly ruled in 1016. Fought Cnut in a series of battles. Shared rule before dying mysteriously.
Edward the Peaceful
King of England (r. 975–978). Known for a peaceful reign before his sudden death. Predecessor to Athelred.
Edward the Confessor
King of England (r. 1042–1066). His death without an heir led to the succession crisis and Norman invasion.

Last Anglo-Saxon king (r. 1066). Won at Stamford Bridge but lost to William at the Battle of Hastings.

First Governor-General of India (1773–1785). Reorganised administration. Faced trial for corruption, acquitted.
