Skeletal/ Muscular Systems Flashcards
(54 cards)
Axial Skeleton
80 bones of the skull, spine, ribs, vertebrae, sternum, or breast (upper torso)
Appendicular Skeleton
126 bones of the upper and lower limbs, shoulders, and hips
What is the difference between Axial Skeleton and Appendicular Skeleton?
Axial Skeleton is made up of 80 bones and the Appendicular Skeleton is made up of 126 bones
Cartilage
A strong, flexible, CONNECTIVE TISSUE found in many areas of the body
Where is cartilage found?
in the nose and outer ear
Ossification
your bone grows back, or comes back stronger than it was before
Joint
the points at with the bones meet
Ligament
A band of fiberous, slightly elastic connective tissue that attaches a bone to a bone.
Tendon
A fiberous cord that attaches muscle to bone
Osteoperosis
A condition in which progressive loss of bone tissue occurs. Happens in older Americans cause bones become weak and brake easily
Scoliosis
A lateral, side to side, or curve of the spine
Arthritis
Inflammation of a joint; can result from injury, natural wear and tear, or autoimmune
Tendonitis
Inflammation of the tendon
Smooth muscles
Act on the lining of passageways and internal organs (usually the slimy organs)
Skeletal Muscles
attached to bone and cause movement. Most of the muscle tissue is made out of it.
Cardiac Muscles
straighted muscle that forms the lining of the heart
Flexor
contraction to make smaller; shortening of the muscle
Extensor
Lengthening of the muscle; to make it longer
Functions of the skeletal system
support movement protection mineral storage bone marrow
how many bones are in the body
206
Types of bones
long bones
short bones
flat bones
irregular bones
what are long bones?
the longest bones in your body
Examples of long bones
tibia, fibula, femur, ulna, radius, and humarous (mostly arms and legs)
what are short bones?
the square and rectangle bones in your body
