Skeletal System Flashcards
(34 cards)
Axial skeleton
the bones of the skull, vertebral column, thorax, and sternum.
Appendicular skeleton
bones of the limbs and limb girdles that are attached to the axial skeleton.
Compact bone
is dense and looks smooth and homogenous
Spongy bone
composed of small needlelike pieces of bone and lots of open space
Long bones
longer than they are wide.
Short bones
generally cube-shaped and contain mostly spongy bone.
Flat bones
thin, flattened, and usually curved.
Irregular bones
bones that do not fit one of the preceding categories.
Diaphysis
makes up most of the bone’s length and is composed of compact bone.
Peritoneum
fibrous connective tissue membrane.
Epiphyseal line
a thin line of bony tissue spanning the epiphysis that looks a bit different from the rest of the bone in that area.
Hematoma
a medical word for bruise, or black and blue mark.
Cranium
the part of the skull that encloses the brain
Occipital bone
bone forming the back and back part of the base of the cranium, the part of the skull that encloses the brain
Vertebral column
the flexible column extending from neck to tail, made of a series of bones, the vertebrae.
Vertebrae
the 33 individual, interlocking bones that form the spinal column
Intervertebral discs
Between each vertebral body is a cushion. - cushion the vertebrae and absorb shocks while allowing the spine flexibility
Cervical vertebrae
the bones within the neck. - form the neck region of the spine
Thoracic vertebrae
the middle section of your spine
Lumbar vertebrae
bones that make up the spinal column or backbone, specifically within the lower back. - massive, blocklike bodies
Sacrum
the large, triangle-shaped bone at the base of the spine - formed by the fusion of five vertebrae
Coccyx
the tailbone - formed from the fusion of three to five tiny, irregularly shaped vertebrae
Sternum
breastbone, the flat plate at the top of your rib cage - a typical flat bone and the result of the fusion of three bones - the manubrium, body, and xiphoid process.
Ribs
one of the curved bones of the chest that are joined to the backbone and help to stiffen the body wall and protect the organs. - twelve pairs form the walls of the bony thorax
