skeletal system Flashcards
(11 cards)
what is the role of the bones in support?
-they support soft tissues
-they provide attachment points for tendons of skeletal muscle
what is the role of the bones in assistance in movement?
-skeletal muscle attaches to bone
what is the role of the bones in blood cell production?
-red bone marrow produces blood cells
what is the role of the bone in protection?
-it protects important internal organs
-cranium protects the brain
-vertebrae protects the spinal cord
-ribs protect the lungs and the heart
what is the ole of the bones in mineral homeostasis?
-bone tissue stores several minerals
-calcium (99% of body’s content)
-phosphorus
what is the role of the bones in triglyceride storage?
-yellow bone marrow which stores triglycerides
what is the structure of bone?
-starts with metaphyses
-middle is the articular cartilage
-end is the periosteum
what does the metaphyses part of bone do?
-contains an epiphyseal growth plate,a layer of hyaline cartilage that allows the diaphysis of the bon to grow in length
what happens when a bone ceases to grow in length?
-the cartilage in the epiphyseal plate is replaced by the bone, the epiphyseal line
what does the articular cartilage part of bone do?
-covers part of the epiphysis where the bone forms articulation (joint) with another bone
-reduces friction and absorbs shock at freely movable joints
