Skeleton Flashcards
(54 cards)
On average how many bones are in the human body?
206
List three functions of bones.
Framework; attachment point for muscles (movement); storage of minerals (salts fats); blood cell production; protection
At what age does a person’s bone mass typically stop growing?
Around age 30
What happens to bone density after age 30?
It gradually decreases as bones lose calcium and other minerals.
What is osteoporosis?
When the loss of bone mass (due to aging) becomes sufficient to impair normal functioning leading to increased fracture risk.
Which bones are most commonly affected by osteoporosis?
Vertebrae ribs pelvis wrist and upper arm.
List three ways to prevent osteoporosis.
Adequate calcium intake; adequate vitamin D (sunlight diet); exercise
What is the main characteristic of osteoarthritis?
Deterioration of joint cartilage over time associated with aging leading to exposed bone surfaces and bony spurs.
What are common symptoms of osteoarthritis?
Pain and stiffness in joints (worse after exercise/pressure); rubbing/grating/crackling sound when moving the joint.
Is there a known cure for osteoarthritis?
No.
What is the function of red marrow?
Produces blood cells through stem cells.
Name a type of bone that protects organs.
Flat bones (e.g. cranium sternum).
Give an example of a long bone.
Femur humerus radius tibia.
What type of bone protects tendons?
Sesamoid bones (e.g. patella).
List the main components of the axial skeleton.
Cranium vertebral column ribs sternum.
What is the function of the appendicular skeleton?
Allows for articulation (movement) of the limbs and girdles.
What is the main portion (shaft) of a long bone called?
Diaphysis.
What is held within the medullary cavity of a long bone?
Yellow marrow.
What covers the ends (epiphyses) of long bones?
A thin layer of articular cartilage.
What is the thin white fibrous layer covering the bone except at joints?
Periosteum.
What are the units of compact bone called?
Osteons or Haversian system.
What are the spaces in compact bone that contain bone cells (osteocytes)?
Lacunae.
How do materials pass between osteocytes in compact bone?
Through tiny canals called canaliculi.
What are the irregular arrangements of bone in spongy/cancellous bone called?
Trabeculae.
