1- provide structural support to body
2-protects internal organs
3- home to bone marrow(produces blood cells-hematopoiesis)
4-underpins movements by attachment to muscles via tendons
5- acts as a mineral store for many processes
Outline 4 types of bones?
• long
•flat
•irregular
•short
Where are long bones located?
Arm/ femour in legs
Where are flat bones located?
I’m the skull/sternum
Where are irregular bones located?
In the vertebrae
Where are short bones located?
Talus and other cuneiform bones in foot-
The sesamoid bone type is a specialised form of short bones which form within tensions
What is the axial skeleton?
Long axis of the body including the skull, spine and rib cage
What is the appendicular skeleton?
Bones of all limbs and griddles that join them to axial skeleton
Outline the 3 groups of the vertebral column;
Cervical vertebrae
Thoracic vertibrae
Lumbar vertebrae
What part of the body does the cervical vertebrae make up?
The neck portion of the spine
What part of the body does the thoracic vertebrae make up?
The upper back
What part of the body does the lumbar vertebrae make up?
The lower part of the back
What is the carpus?
Group of small bones at the proximal part of the hand
Describe bones in the lower limb:
- LONG bones in the legs and have MOST LOAD AND STRESS put through them
-also have LARGE resivior of BONE MARROW-PRODUCES a lot of RBS
