Staphylococcus aureus (bacterial) Gram positive, clusters
Folliculitis symptom
Infected hair follicle; pimples
Stye symptom
Infected eyelash follicle
Boil symptom
Skin abscess - must be drained, not easy for antibiotics to reach it
Impetigo symptom
Isolated crusty pustules that rupture; usu. affects children from ages 2-5yo
Scalded skin syndrome
Skin appears very red and peels; caused by staphylococcal toxin A; concern for outbreaks in hospital nurseries
Erysipelas, Necrotizing fasciitis - cause?
Streptococcus pyogenes (B)
Gram positive, chains
Produce toxins like hemolysis and damaging enzymes
Otitis externa symptom
Symptom - “Swimmers ear”
Self limiting
Comedonal acne symptom
Mild acne
Pseudomonal infections
Pseudomonas aeruginosa
Opportunistic in burns, esp. Burn patients -characterized by blue green pus
