Skin System Flashcards
•epidermis, dermis and hypodermis •functions of the skin •epidermis layers • melanocytes, keratinocytes, Merkel cells and Langerhans cells (10 cards)
What is the largest organ in the human body?
Skin
What are the three main layers of the skin?
- epidermis
- dermis
- hypodermis (adipose layer)

What are the five layers of the skin’s epidermis?
- stratum corneum
- stratum lucidum
- stratum granulosum
- stratum spinosum
- stratum basale

(how to remember the five layers of the skin’s epidermis (superficial to deep))
Come Let’s Get Sun Burned
C: corneum
L: lucidum
G: granulosum
S: spinosum
B: basale
What are the three major cell types located in the skin’s epidermis?
- keratinocytes
- melanocytes
- Langerhans cells
What occurs at the stratum granulosum of the epidermis?
Keratinocytes die and lose their nuclei.
What is the function of the stratum corneum of the epidermis?
Contains flattened keratinocytes that prevents pathogen invasion and loss of fluids/salts.
.
What are the two major types of sweat glands found in the human body?
- eccrine (found ALL over the body)
- apocrine (found only in the armpits and pubic region and is responsible for body odor)
What is the function of arrector pili muscles (or the process of piloerection) in the skin?
Contracts in response to cold or fear which raises the hairs on the skin.
What are the two layers of the skin’s dermis (from superficial to deep)?
- papillary layer
- reticular layer
