Rules shared by most people in a culture as they are deemed as important. General guidelines that judge between what is right and wrong

What is a social norm
A social expectation that guides people’s behaviour. They can be informal and unwritten or formal and written

What is drink driving
Driving under the influence of alcohol
1950s drink driving
Society was tolerant and didn’t see it as a serious crime.
Only 15% of households owned a car
1976 drink driving
Road Safety Act introduced a Blood Alcohol limit of 80mg per 100ml of blood, any above was a legal offence.
1983 drink driving
High risk offenders scheme for convicted offenders with an alcohol problem
1991 drink driving
Law was introduced stating a 5 year sentence for those who cause death while driving under the influence.
2014 drink driving
Causing death under the influence rose to 14 year convictions.
THINK! campaign found 91% thought drink driving was unacceptable.
Improved knowledge impacting drink driving
Government now collect and publish statistics on drink driving deaths, educating people on it’s dangers.
E.g. 200 deaths in 2024
Legislations impacts on drink driving
Laws that include punishments act as a deterrent and punishment to make people not do it, or not do it again.
Campaigns affecting drink driving
THINK! educate through programmes, TV adverts and posters on it’s dangers, deterring people from it.

19th century homosexuality
The death sentence was removed but it was still illegal.
Growing role models such as Oscar Wilde, a poet who received 2 years in prison.
1957 homosexuality
The Wolfenden report stated 2laws were ‘impingement on civil liberty’ and shouldn’t intrude personal morality”
1967 homosexuality
Was decriminalised in England and Wales.
The age of consent was brought to 21 years.
2000 homosexuality
AOC lowered to 16 under the Sexual Offences Amendment Act, which was the same as heterosexuals.

2014 homosexuality
Same sex marriage became legal under the Marriage of Same Sex Couples Act 2013.
Globalisation affecting homosexuality
The UK becomes more culturally diverse and open minded, causing them to be accepting of new ways of life.
Secularisation affecting homosexuality
Bible and Quran see it as sinful, so society did, as we become less influenced by religion, they choose their own views.
