Social Cognition Flashcards
(31 cards)
What does the socio-cultural level focus on
it focuses on the influence that other people exert on behavior by studying behavior in social and cultural contexts
What is the social cognition process
Social cognition refers to the processes involved in interpreting, analyzing, remembering, and using information about the social world.

Our personalities are frequently what
set aside by the strong situational influences emanating from our social world.
What are the 2 main approaches to measuring or assessing attitudes
- The first looks at observing peoples behavior
2. The second gets participants to tell the researcher about their attitudes
What is the structure of attitudes
Either the Tricomponent or ABC model of attitudes
What does the A stand for in the ABC model of attitudes
Affective component
What does the B stand for in the ABC model of attitudes
Behavioural component
What does the C stand for in the ABC model of attitudes
Cognitive component
Which variables help determine whether or not a person will act in accordance with their attitude
The strength of the attitude
How easy it comes to mind (accessibility),
How specific a particular attitude is in a given situation,
What are some ways to measure attitudes
Self-reporting measures
Attitude scales
Open ended questions
Why might self reporting measures be inaccurate
- The questions may not measure the attitude being investigated
- People may be influenced by their recent experiences
- Participants may respond in the way they believe to be the socially correct way
What are the 3 different types of social comparison

- Upward social comparison
- Downward social comparison
What is prejudice

What does stereotyping lead to
Racism, illusory correlations and gender bias
Like all areas of psychology the study of social cognition requires researchers to do what
obtain data which supports or refutes their hypotheses
What is cognitive dissonance
A person experiences cognitive dissonance when there is a difference between a persons attitude and their behaviour
What theories show how behaviour influences attitude
- Cognitive Dissonance theory
- Festinger study
- Bem’s self perception
- Self Perception Theory
The relationship between attitude and behaviour is what
bi-directional
Our perceptions of others and of ourselves are what
vulnerable to a number of biases
Which variables help determine whether a person will act in accordance with their attitudes
- The strength of the attitude
- How easy it comes to mind
- How specific a particular attitudes is in a given situations
What does ELM stand for
Elaboration
likelihood
model
What is the ELM model of persuasion
it is the dual process theory describing the change of attitude
