10
Q

How may social isolation be self imposed and how would this affect the illness?

A

The schizophrenic may find interaction with others highly stressful and therefore withdraw from society. This may worsen the illness as they don’t receive feedback so their strange behaviour becomes normal.

14
Q

How could lack of social interaction explain delusional thoughts?

A

Usually delusional thoughts come and go as we have people around us to assure us we are being irrational but those without these social groups allow the thoughts to continue.

Q

How may social isolation affect the diagnosis and treatment of schizophrenia?

Schizophrenia is usually treated much more effectively went caught early if individuals lack a social support network these symptoms may go unnoticed and so the illness becomes much more developed and difficult to treat. The symptoms are so ingrained.

Q

How does social isolation link to urbanity?

A

Those living in an urban area are more likely to be socially isolated. They do not live in close knit villages were an established community is more likely.

17
Q

According to statistics which ethnic group is more likely to suffer from schizophrenia? And nature of their admittance?

A

Afro-Carribeans. More likely to be admitted against their will than voluntarily admitted.

18
Q

Could this be genetic?

A

No as the increased risk was not consistent throughout Carribeans.

19
Q

What is most likely to cause this occurrence ?

A

The stress of having to migrate and integrate into new foreign society

20
Q

Statistics on occurrence of schizophrenia in Afro-Carribeans?

A

Afro-Carribeans in the UK are seven times more likely to be diagnosed with schizophrenia than white people.

21
Q

What did Harrison et al find?

A

He found that the risk of schizophrenia development was much higher in the children of the migrants suggesting that they may experience discrimination in society and psychiatry.

22
Q

What did Boydell et al find?

A

He found that there were more cases of schizophrenia amongst migrant groups when they formed a small proportion of the local community this could be as they suffered more racism due to being apart of the minority.

23
Q

What is the social defeat hypothesis?

A

The idea that the more social exclusion and defeat a person experiences the more lily they are to develop a psychiatric illness.

24
Q

Evaluation - Research support

A
  • Faris and Durham
  • Jim Van Os
25
Evaluation - Contradictory evidence
City dwellers tend to me more healthy as they have better access to healthcare etc.
26
Evaluation -What is the social drift hypothesis
This is the idea that it is not the city life that causes the schizophrenia. Individuals who are diagnosed with schizophrenia are more likely to be unable to maintain employment and therefore their socio-economic status dropped so they are forced to move to a more affordable area, typically the inner city.
27
Evaluation - Link between onset of Psychotic disorders and rural areas.
A study found that those who were at risk of developing a psychiatric dis order were less likely to develop it if they moved to a rural area. This shows there may be link but not a direct causation.
28
Evaluation - Methodology
Jones et al - Rich data that helps establish cause and effect. Takes a long time, high attrition and been changes to society. Faris et al - Good for spotting pattens, useful where experiments aren't possible. Can't prove cause and effect, may be other hidden factors.
29
Evalaution - Application, what is it?
Social skills training
30
Evaluation - How does Social Skills Training Work? Why is it beneficial?
Teaches clients important social clues to help them understand their environment. Involves hands on practice by role plays, days out etc. Has a flexible focus and is easy to follow. Can be done in a range of places.
31
Evalaution - Research support for SST.
Turner found that using SST in schizophrenics improved their negative symptoms and enhanced their social functioning.
