Q

What is the supporting evidence for the social support? (conformity)

A

Variation of Asch’s line study the real ppt saw another confederate disagreeing with the majority, which caused conformity to drop sharply.
The confederate provided the ppt with social and moral support even if they’re not giving the right answer.

Q

How does social support effect obedience?

A

The pressure to obey can be reduced if there’s another person who is also seen to disobey. Disobedient peers therefore act as role models on which the individual can model their own behaviour.

Q

What is the supporting evidence for the social support?

A

A further variation of Milgram’s study showed the real ppt to be part of a group of 3 testing the learner.
The other two ppts were confederates, one after the other they refused to continue shocking the learner and withdrew.
The rate of obedience dropped from the previous 65% to just 10%. This shows that social support can be a factor that leads to resistance to obedience.

Q

How does high internal locus control lead to resistance from social influence?

A

Individuals with this trait tend to seek info that is useful to them, and are less likely to rely on opinions from others (conformity).
They’re also more achievement-oriented, so are more likely to become leaders rather than followers (obedience).
These individuals are also more likely to resist coercion.

Q

(+AO3) What is the supporting evidence for LoC?

A

meta-analysis of studies of relationships between locus of control and different forms of social influence and the likelihood to conform and found a significant locus of control.

16
Q

(-AO3) How might’ve LoC changed overtime?

A

People are more likely to show externality now especially young people.
Meta-analysis found that young Americans increasingly believe their fate is determined by luck and other powerful beings.
This may explain why young people feel more alienated.

17
Q

(+AO3) What is the RLA for social support?

A

An important factory in minority influence is social support.
Disobedience can catalyse a conversion process. This leads to social change for example, women’s right to vote and the suffragettes.

18
Q

(+AO3) What is the supporting evidence for social support?

A

Asch’s line study.
33% conformity with a unanimous majority which dropped to 5.5% with an alliance between confederate and naïve ppts.
