LOC (8 cards)
What does LOC stand for?
Locus of control
What is internal LOC?
belief that things that happen to them are largely controlled by themselves
What is external LOC?
belief that things that happen to them are out of their control
What is the LOC continuum?
the scale of internal LOC to external LOC
How is LOC linked to resistance to SI?
people with high internal LOC are more able to resist pressures as they usually feel that their actions are their own responsibility
Holland (1967)
repeated Milgram’s study and measured LOCs of Ps
37% of internals did not go to 450v
23% of externals did not go to 450v
Twenge et el (2004)
analysed data form American LOC studies and found that people became less obedient BUT also more external
Rotter (1982)
LOC is not the most important factor in resistance to SI.
