Who were the Haudenosaunee?
A powerful alliance of six Indigenous nations. Lived in the northeastern U.S. and southern Canada. They had a strong democratic government. Known for the Great Law of Peace, which influenced American democracy.
Where did the Haudenosaunee live?
The Haudenosaunee lived in the Northeastern Woodlands.
The Haudenosaunee consisted of many First Nations groups. How many were there and what were they called?
The Haudenosaunee consisted of six different groups. The Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga, Seneca, and (later) Tuscarora
What language do these groups of the Haudenosaunee speak most?
Algonquin. But they are all diverse in their own way.
What were some core values of the Haudenosaunee?
- collective thinking and considering the
future generations - decision making by consensus;
- sharing labour and the benefits of that
labour - duty to family, clan, nation, and the
Iroquois Confederacy - equality; everyone is equal and is a full
partner in the society.
The Haudenosaunee were the original farmers. What were ‘The Three Sisters’?
They were the Haudenosaunee’s main crops. Corn, beans, and squash.
What was the role of Haudenosaunee women?
They had a matrilineal society. Each leader of a Longhouse was a woman. They were respected because of their ability to give life.
Women’s roles were equal to men’s roles. What were some of the roles of men?

*Led rituals & ceremonies
*Helped people & taught kids
How did the Haudenosaunee make decisions?
Haudenosaunee women, especially Clan Mothers, chose and could remove leaders. Leaders met in a council of 50 to discuss important issues. Decisions were made by consensus during council meetings.
What is the Seventh Generation?
The Haudenosaunee cared deeply for the environment and made decisions based on how they would affect seven generations in the future.
