Q

What is the new rights ideas about rationality in relation to crime?

A

People are rational (and aware of consequences). If people commit crime when the benefits outweigh the costs, then the costs should be increased. This means heavier punishment

Q

What is the new rights ideas about the role of the government in relation to crime?

A

The role of the government is that people can conduct their business with minimum intervention. In the 1960’s measures were taken in USA and UK to alleviate poverty and crime rates soared. Increasing wealth seems to increase crime rates. The government therefore cannot eliminate the causes of crime

Q

What is the new rights ideas about the importance of community in relation to crime?

A

Informal controls help restrain people from committing crime. The loss of community can lead to more opportunities for people to commit crime. “Families without fathers” mean young males have no role model and are therefore more likely to commit crime.

Q

Who would criticise the new rights ideas about crime and why?

A

Marxists like Croall would criticise these ideas

17
Q

Why would marxists criticise New Right theories of crime?

A

The new right ignore crimes committed by the wealthy and therefore ignore white collar crime as they do not believe they are affected by the welfare state so are less likely to commit crimes. However, research has found that white collar crime is extensive and can be very damaging.

18
Q

How does the New right theory draw attention away from the real causes of crime?

A

Crime is usually due to the social condition people are placed in (homeless people are not homeless due to a lack of morality). It could be argued cuts in welfare can cause crime to increase as people do not have the help they need and this opposes new right views.

19
Q

What are the advantages of New right theories of crime?

A

It is a holistic theory and connects with radical criminology and right realism. It integrates social economic and political factors that can help contribute to why crime occurs

20
Q

What two main concepts do Right Libertarians Hayek emphasise in connection to crime?

A

Freedom and individual responsibility

21
Q

What are Right libertarians view of freedom as a concept in connection to crime?

A

People are free to become rich or poor moral or immoral

22
Q

What are Right Libertarians view of individual responsibility as a concept in connection to crime?

A

Right Libertarians reject the Statist approach as it’s a individual’s responsibility to not commit crime.

23
Q

What is the statist approach?

A

When a criminal commits a crime it is not their fault but the states fault to better their circumstances.

24
Q

What do Right Libertarians believe about families without fathers in relation to crime?

A

Boys lack a role model and identities of family and work are destroyed and may be poverty stricken, but this isn’t an excuse for crime. Welfare state stops people from being responsible for themselves and should be reduced.

25
What do right libertarians believe about morality in relation to crime?
Stricter morality needs to be enforced
26
What are the advantages of right libertarian ideas of crime?
- Supported by Functionalism about consensus - Free will is agreed with by Neo Marxists
27
Who conducted new right research on the underclass and poverty?
Charlesworth
28
Where did Charlesworth conduct his research?
Did research on people living in Rotherham (Yorkshire) on a council estate flat
29
How did Charlesworth conduct his research?
Used ethnographic research and methods like participant observation and conversational interviews
30
What did Charlesworth find about the underclass?
miserable economic conditions negatively effected physical and mental health, unemployed people suffered depression and felt robbed of their identity and value
31
What did Charlesworth find about the underclass and crime?
some were motivated to commit crime but most didn't
32
What did Murray and Hernstein (1994) believe?
That inadequate socialisation leads to the development of the underclass who are lazy and have criminal tendencies. The over generous welfare state encourages feckless behaviour.
33
What does Murray believe about single mothers?
they should be condemned as they raise young boys with no male role model who are more likely to turn to crime
34
What did Murray believe about boys without fathers?
They have poor impulse control, become sexual predators and cannot hold down a job causing them to turn to crime
35
What does Murray think the greatest predictor of criminality is?
illegitimacy is the greatest predictor of criminality rather than poverty
36
What does Murray think about girls without fathers?
They are emotionally damaged and search for a father substitute and then get pregnant early in life
37
What does Murray think about the impact of low IQ?
it predicts poverty, dropping out of school
