What is design ethnography?
Studying people in their natural environment to understand how to make more usable design
What are the advantages and disadvantages of design ethnography?
Advantages:
- Can see unarticulated needs
- More empathic information
- Deeper, contextual understanding
Disadvantages:
- Time consuming
- researcher bias risk
What are some methods for design ethnography?
- Observations
- Interviews while people are performing tasks
- shadowing
- Asking users to self-document their experiences
What is participatory design?
Actively involving end users in the design and development process as co-designers. Giving the users genuine influence over the design
What are some methods of participatory design?
- Workshops
- Prototyping
- Co-design sessions
What are the advantages and disadvantages of participatory design?
Advantages:
- Encourages trust
- Deeper insights
- More usable, accepted systems
Disadvantages:
- Users may not understand how to design
- May be hard to balance viewpoints
- Time consuming
What is value-sensitive design?
accounting for human values and ethics (such as privacy, fairness, accessibility and autonomy) throughout the design process
what are some important human values to consider in design?
- Privacy
- accessibility
- autonomy
- fairness
- sustainability
- safety
- trust
value-sensitive design examples
- AI algorithm: Embedding fairness and transparency to avoid bias in decision-making
- Health app: Ensuring privacy, data control, and consent
- Smart home tech: Supporting autonomy for elderly users while ensuring safety and respect
