“While I was working at Waitrose, we had a particularly busy Saturday afternoon when one of the tills suddenly stopped working. There was a long queue of customers, and the atmosphere was getting tense.”

Task:
“As one of the more experienced team members on shift, I needed to quickly figure out how to keep the queue moving and prevent customer frustration, without causing confusion for the rest of the team.”

Action:
“I quickly asked one of my colleagues to help direct customers to other open tills while I temporarily took over scanning items on a self-checkout, guiding customers through and assisting those unfamiliar with the system. I also called a supervisor to report the issue with the broken till and requested they send someone to take a look.”

Result:
“We managed to clear the queue in a few minutes, and several customers actually commented on how well we handled the situation. My manager thanked me for staying calm and taking initiative under pressure.”
