sources of coastal sediment Flashcards
(10 cards)
aeolian deposition
WIND-when winds are stronger than 40km/h the sand will start to roll across the surface, meaning deposition will occur
Marine erosion
EROSION THAT TAKES PLACE BY THE SEA
when the waves shape the landscapes by erosional processes
Hydraulic action
water + air that is forced into cracks and then breaks apart
Pounding
masses of breaking waves creates pressure onto the rocks which weakens it
Abrasion
the waves hurl the rocks that are contained within the wave at the cliffs and wears away rock- like sandpaper
Attrition
rocks that crash into each other and break into smaller pieces of rock
Freeze thaw weathering
rainwater enters cracks in the rocks, freezes and then rock expands by 10% and breaks apart.
Biological weathering
tree roots break apart the rocks
mass movement
forces acting on the slope moving sediment down onto the coast below
terrestrial
FROM LAND
rivers pick up sediment through erosion, weathering and mass movement.
When freshwater meets salty water FLOCCULATION happens (when clay particles clump together and become heavy and then sink)
