Q

What is Comet?

A

An object made of dust and ice that orbits the Sun in a highly elliptical orbit, which often reaches beyond the solar system.

13
Q

What is Elliptical?

A

The oval-shaped path with which objects orbit the sun. Some objects, such as comets, have a more elliptical orbit than others.

16
Q

What is Solar System?

A

The gravitationally bound systems of a star and the objects that orbit it. Solar systems orbit around their galaxies just as planets orbit around their suns.

17
Q

What is The Sun?

A

The star at the centre of our solar system.

18
Q

What is Electromagnetic spectrum?

A

The range of wavelengths or frequencies over which electromagnetic radiation extends.

19
Q

What is Infrared radiation?

A

Radiation extending from the red, longer wavelengths of the visible-light range to the microwave range. It is invisible to the eye and felt as heat.

20
Q

What is Nuclear fusion?

A

The process of making a single heavy nucleus (part of an atom) from two lighter nuclei.

21
Q

What is Star?

A

A ball of gas, mostly hydrogen and helium, held together by gravity.

22
Q

What is Ultraviolet radiation?

A

Radiation of a wavelength which is shorter than visible light but longer than X-rays. It is invisible to the eye and turns skin darker.

23
Q

What is Visible radiation?

A

Radiation of wavelengths between ultraviolet and infrared, which is visible to the human eye.

24
Q

What is Astronomical distance?

A

The distance from one celestial body to another, measured in light-years (9.5 × 10¹⁵ m).

25
What is Galaxy?
A huge collection of stars (like our Sun), each with their own solar system. The Sun is in a galaxy called the Milky Way.
26
What is Nebula?
The massive cloud of dust and gas from which a star forms.
27
What is Protostar?
When a cloud of gas and dust has begun to collapse under its own gravity but is not yet hot enough to shine.
28
What is Stable star?
A star in equilibrium (the Sun), meaning the force of gravity is balanced by the outward gas pressure from nuclear fusion.
29
What is Big Bang Theory?
The theory that the Universe formed about 13.8 billion years ago, from a very small, extremely hot, dense region which expanded outwards.
30
What is Cosmic microwave background radiation (CMBR)?
Microwave radiation of a specific frequency, which is observed at all points in space around us. Its existence was predicted by the Big Bang Theory.
31
What is The Hubble Constant?
A constant, which can be expressed as a ratio of the speed at which the galaxy is moving away from the Earth to its distance from the Earth.
32
What is Recede?
To move further away.
33
What is Redshift?
An increase in the observed wavelength of electromagnetic radiation emitted from an object which is moving further away.
34
What is Universe?
Contains the galaxies and their solar systems.
