Specialties Final Review Flashcards
(35 cards)
Plain Catgut
(Absorbable)Provides the fastest healing for mucous membranes and subcutaneous tissues
Chromic catgut
(Absorbable) Provides much slower healing, allowing the internal tissues to heal first
Vicryl
A synthetic absorbable material
Silk
(Nonabsorbable) Used for its strength and ease of use
Polyester fiber
(Nonabsorbable) One of the strongest sutures
Nylon
(Nonabsorbable) Used for its strength and elasticity
How long does the patient have the suture in when a nonabsorbable suture is placed?
5-7 days
What is periodontal dressings and what is another term for it?
-Also known as Periopacks
-Holds the flabs in place
-Protect newly forming tissues
-Minimize postoperative pain, infection, and hemorrhage
-Protect the surgical site from trauma during eating and drinking
-Support mobile teeth during healing process
2 most commonly used Periodontal dressing materials are?
-(ZOE) Zinc oxide-eugenol dressing
-Non-eugenol dressing
Forceps Extraction
The surgical removal of a tooth that’s fully erupted and has a solid, intact crown that can be grasped firmly with the forceps
Multiple Extractions and Alveoplasty
Multiple extraction procedure involving and smoothing of the alveolar crest of the surgical site
Removal of Impacted teeth
A complex extraction of a tooth that has not erupted
-Soft tissue impaction
-Hard tissue impaction
Need a pan to see how deep the tooth is.
Pericoronitis
Overgrowth of tissue, last molar, false pocket formed, collecting food, debris, and plaque. Area becomes inflamed and painful
Orthognathic surgery
Performed to correct malformations or functional deformities of the mandible and/or maxilla, such as class III, open bite, or severe bilateral crossbite
Swelling Control: During 24 hrs
A cold pack is placed, 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off.
Swelling control: After 24 hrs
-External heat is applied to increase circulation to promote healing
-Pt may begin rinsing the oral cavity with warm saline solution
Paresthesia
Loss of sensation caused by anesthetic before dental treatment (could take up to 6 months to get back to normal)
Alveolitis (dry socket) or Alveolar Osteitis
-Not caring for the extraction side as instructed
-Not following home care ins
-Smoking, sneezing, coughing, spitting, or drinking from a straw within the first 24 hrs
Periocornitis
Overgrown tissue
subperiosteal implant
-The metal frame is placed under the periosteum but on top of the bone
-Indication: those who don’t have sufficient alveolar ridge remaining to support the endosteal type implant
Transosteal Implant
-Primarily used in pt with severely resorbed ridges
-The implant is inserted through the interior border of the mandible and into the edentulous area
What is the most common type of transosteal implant?
What is Pericoronitis?
It’s an overgrowth of tissue, last molar, false pocket that collects food, debris and plaque . Area becomes painful and inflamed.
What is Orthognathic surgery?
It’s a procedure that corrects malformations or functional deformities of the mandible/maxilla. Ex. Class III, Anterior Open bite, severe bilateral crossbite
