Speciation Flashcards
(4 cards)
What is speciation?
The evolutionary process by which populations evolve to become distinct species, it is how a new kind of plant or animal is created
When does speciation occur?
When a group within a species separates from other members of the same species and develops its own unique characteristics
What is an example of an animal who went through speciation?
Galapagos finches
What happened to the Galapagos finches during speciation?
Different species of Galapagos finches live on different islands that are separated by the ocean
Over millions of years each species of finch developed their own unique beak that specially adapted to their diet
Finches feeding on nuts and seeds developed a large blunt beak for cracking the shells
Finches feeding on cactus flowers developed long, thin beaks for probing into them
Finches feeding on insects developed medium-sized beaks for catching and grasping insects
