Speed of Conductance Flashcards
(4 cards)
1
Q
How does myelin sheath affect the speed of conductance?
A
- nodes of ranvier are the only place on the axon where depolarisation can occur
- so impulses jump from node to node by saltatory conduction
2
Q
How does axon diameter affect the speed of conductance?
A
- a larger diameter increases the speed of conductance
- less resistance to the flow of ions
3
Q
How does temperature affect the speed of conductance?
A
- a greater temperature means ions have more kinetic energy so there is a faster rate of Na+ and K+ diffusion
- also affects rate of respiration as it affects enzyme activity which causes implications with some response times
4
Q
What is the major draw back with increased temperature increasing the speed of conductance?
A
can cause membrane proteins to denture so no more action potentials can be generated
