Q

What occurs in spermatogenesis (phase 1) ?

A
  • spermatogonia (stem cells) undergo mitotic divisions
  • spermatogonia split into types (A/I/B)
  • generates primary spermatocytes
  • Stallion performs this 8 times = 256

Q

What occurs at the meiosis stage (phase 2)?

A
  • spermatocytes undergo meiosis 1 into secondary spermatocytes then undergo meiosis 2 to transfer into spermatids
    -secondary spermatocytes = short lived
-primary spermatocytes = longest lived germ cell

Q

What is the structure of a sperm cell?

A
  • Head ( nucleus)
  • Acrosome (top of the head)(hydolytic enzymes)
  • post nucular cap/postacorsomal region
  • Mid piece of tail (mitochondia)
  • principle peice
    -end piece of tail
