What is spina bifida?
It is an anomaly where there’s failure of development of the neural tube
Split spine
What are the two types of spina bifida?
Oculta and Aperta
What is spina bifida occulta?
It’s a hidden vertebral defect with neural involvement.Theres usually a visible mark on the lower back it appears as a red line when babies are born or a dimple or dark spot
What is Spina bifida Aperta?
An open dysraphism
Neural tissues communicate with external environment.Theres displacement of the hindbrain
Could lead to hydrocephalus
What is the difference between a myelomeningocele and a meningocele?
A meningocele is the bulging of membranes and a myelomeningocele is a bump on the spinal cord and nerve tissue
What are the risk factors of Spina Bifida?
Diabetes
Obesity
Certain medications
Decreased levels in maternal folate
What are the complications of Spina Bifida?
Contractures
Fractures
Pressure sores
Hydrocephalus
Scoliosis
What is the PT management?
Family education on positioning child to prevent Pressure sores and also doing Pasive movements to prevent contractures
Issuing Assive devices such as a buggies or wheelchair
Achieving optimal function by providing neuro developmental therapy
What causes spina bifida?
Maldevelopment of the ectopic,meso and neurectodermal tissues
What are the S&S?
Swelling
Blindness
Paralysis
Muscle weakness
Loss of sensation
Dimple in skin
